Back to school night. I am sitting at his desk, half listening as the teacher is going over her expectations for the year. On the desk to my left is a hand drawn picture of a beautiful, blonde girl holding a poem written with a skilled hand. To my right is a picture of a darling brunette boy with his hands wrapped around another happy poem. I turn ever so slightly in my seat as to have a better view of the other 20 pictures on the desks surrounding me. Typical, well drawn, smiley faced kids. All of them. Apparently Ms. S. has 22 kids and 1 zombie enrolled in her class this year.

I wonder about the wonders of science.
I hear the sounds of nature.
I want to be a zombie.
I am Nick Ross.
I pretend to be a zombie.
I feel the cool, fresh, flesh.
I touch delicious, tempting, brains.
I worry about nothing.
I am very confused with my life.
I understand the true meaning of life.
I say "Thou art confusing"
I dream about the dreams of science.
I try to be a scientist.
I hope I am alive during the year 2040.
I am Nick Ross.
"I worry about nothing. I am very confused with my life. I understand the true meaning of life. I hope I am alive during the year 2040." The words make me swell with emotion. They are so true. So him. I fall even deeper in love with my boy at that moment.
The orientation winds to a close and as we are gathering our papers and personal belongings the teacher walks over, looks us straight in the eyes and says "I LOVE your son!" (This is the uber strict teacher talking. The hard one we are hoping will prepare him for those imminent junior high years.) "He has such a wonderful sense of humor, and he's SMART!" she exclaims in a surprised way.
I guess it is always a bit surprising when zombies turn out to be witty.

We're off to a good start.

I wouldn't know what lovely treasures my child left for me on his desk, or one diddly darn thing about his teacher or classroom, for that matter.... SEEING AS HOW I COMPLETELY SPACED BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT!!!!!!
Impressive all around.
Your heart had to grow at least three sizes! It was great to see Brandon the other night at the Bees game...wish we could have seen you, too.
I knew I needed to check your blog today. That kid is going places. Hollywood, watch out! Thanks for sharing.
