Conversation at noon on a Saturday-

9th grader calls from a model U.N. he's atteding at a local university:

me:  so how is it?

brayden :  mom, this is probably . . . the funnest thing i have ever done.

me:  wow!  really?  what is it you're doing?

brayden:  we're discussing the israeli occupation of palestine.  they've broken us into groups and i just went up in front of everyone and spoke about it.  when i finished a bunch of people came up to me and told me how smart i was.  we're at lunch now and three high school guys have asked me to help them with their papers.  i'm really good at this  mom.

me:  that's awesome honey!  what is it you're talking about again?

brayden:  (slow, as if english is a second language for me or maybe he's forgotten i'm not in grade school) the i-s-r-a-e-l-i  o-c-c-u-p-a-t-i-o-n of p-a-l-e-s-t-i-n-e.  well, i've got to go now mom.  love you.

he's not being demeaning.  he simply realizes he's speaking to someone who isn't certain whether or not there is a time zone change between lake powell and park city.  i was initially disappointed when my firstborn didn't get my brown eyes or auburn hair but it's times like these that i'm amazingly thrilled he didn't dip too far into this gene pool.

"good lucky at the U.N. thingy honey!"
