We are startled by a blood curdling scream.

My husband takes the stairs by twos with me close on his heals.

"What happened?" We ask big brother #2 who is still in a morning fog.

"Nick is sick of his 'stupid, mupid, fupid' name," he replies shuffling sleepily down the hall to the bathroom.

"Well then please get ready for school Jimmy." my sweetheart calls into their shared bedroom at the still figure curled up under the navy blue comforter.

Thirty minutes later Brandon and I are seated in an IEP (individualized education plan) meeting for Nick. This one has been called to discuss Occupational Therapy. I let my eyes wander for a moment noticing the vice principals new hairdo, the resource lady's perfectly manicured nails and the teachers tired eyes. The O.T. hands us a small pile of papers and launches into their "findings." My suit and tie husband cracks a joke or two, always good at lightening the mood. The teacher shares a few of her concerns, my vision of her day becomes a little clearer . . . and I feel as blue as the coat sitting to my left at the moon shaped table.

Thirty minutes of Occupational Therapy a month. That's what Nick will be receiving. Thirty minutes, a month.

We sign the papers, thank the ladies for their time and walk out to the playground to gather our children . . . Matt, Allie and little Jimmy.

*I had school lunch with Nick today. He kept planting long, wet kisses on my cheek and brushing his hand through my hair. I guess that means he's forgiven me for naming him such a horrendous name as Nick. (shudder)

Brandon is so quick witted in such an endearing way.

It must have been a tough meeting, but don't be blue. Jimmy (aka Nick) is one of the sweetest boys I know with some amazing parents.

Wow! Way to go public school OT! Sam was put on a "consultative basis" need for OT? What the..? The kid has one hand that functions, surely they could have found a few more minutes to help him. I guess that's why we pay the big bucks for private therapy. Good luck!

I am truly sorry about your "blue" day, buteven in your sadness you have the knack for brightening all others.

You paint the most vivid pictures with your words. I felt like I could imagine every detail of the room, down to the background noises in the hall, and the smell of the school lunch. In your next life, you should really be a creative writing professor!!!!
