One moment they're not here

and the next moment they are.
Just like that.
A hospital room of three
suddenly becomes a room of four.
Life. it's a gift. a miracle.
A cross walk, screeching tires
an unrecognizable scream
curling up from a dark place inside me

a couple of feet separate my son and the hurried driver
time freezes for a moment
as everyone in the intersection
realizes what could have been

but it wasn't
and we continue on to the toy store.

while my child gingerly handles a wooden airplane
I step into a corner and allow myself quiet tears
while offering a silent prayer of gratitude

once again I realize
that life is a gift,
a miracle.

and happy "King Arthur Martin Jr." day
from our house to yours

Oh my. Too close. A prayer of gratitude was surely needed. A Gift indeed.

I was in a restaurant with my mom and older sister when I saw my 2 year old niece run out the door and into the street where trax was speeding right towards her. It seriously happened within like 5 seconds. I remember just shrieking my niece's name in the restaurant and running out the door after everyone else. Luckily we grabbed her out of the street and she was fine but I will never forget that. What a miracle.
