Boys and Guns

"My boys will NEVER play with guns."

Go ahead.  Place those words atop a scoop of rice, douse with soy sauce and hand me a fork.

My friend assured me that if I didn't let my little boys play with guns they were sure to create guns of their own. They would make them out of "legos, sticks and peanut butter sandwiches," she said.  She was right.  You wonder how I mistook "leprechaun" for "lego gun" at the table yesterday morning?  It just so happens that Nick has a favorite gun that he has created from, you guessed it, legos.

My black and white thinking has softened to a more palatable grey on this subject.  After enjoying the company of these small men for a number of years I've realized that they have come from a different mold, an amazing mold.  They aren't male by accident.  Their spirits have been male since the beginning of forever.  Males are inherent protectors.  And thank goodness they are.  My husband and father excel in this regard.  Maybe they're not "packing heat" but they would be if our day and age necessitated it.

I'm done arguing about air soft, paint ball and "I am Man" computer games. I'm going to redirect my energy into teaching respect and responsibility.

This is a terrific book if you've got boys.  Helps a mom understand why her boys need to wrestle, run and, well, build guns out of legos.

I'm sure I'll be dishing myself up another healthy serving of
"My kids will NEVER. . ."
again soon.

You're welcome to join me.

Well, I remember saying "my girls will NEVER be 'girly girls' because well... look at me..." and that is EXACTLY what they are. I have NO idea what I am doing and it seems many other mothers don't either. We learn as we go. And I suppose THAT is what IT is all about.

I wouldn't CHANGE a thing either. Although, I DO HATE all of the MAKE-UP!!!

The other my girls get and the farther away from baby-toddler age...and not being able to have little boys...I am always amazed at how different girls and boys play. How one loves dolls and one loves cars. They are wired different and how neat it is to see how each has the ability to show who THEY REALLY are even as young children. I know there will be times that I will be a TOTAL hypocrite but ya know...each child is different and my childhood is definitely not the same as my little girls....I am along for the ride...along for the ride.

May I also recommend "Wild At Heart" by John Eldredge. It's a really good read, and facinating!
